Winslow, ME
Susan J. Childs, MD of Winslow, Maine, wife, mother, sister, role model, physician and community advocate, passed away on the morning of November 4th while under the watchful eye of her husband. In Susan's words: " The last three and one half years were hard on me. They were hard on my husband John Salvato, children Julie, Luke and Vincent Salvato, my siblings Gifford Childs, Ann Childs and Ellen Arvidson, as well as my extended family and dear friends who hiked, biked, kayaked, camped, played cribbage with me, cooked, cleaned and kept me company. I know you will weep because I am gone. But please smile because I was here and I am part of you. My memory lives through you and everything we did together. This was a journey that began when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2001. I was never afraid of dying, I just wanted to live my life well. And I was so deeply loved. Please laugh for me, sing for me and hold onto me through memory and love." Sue touched so many people. One of her cherished experiences was taking care of her patients and delivering hundreds of babies as a family physician in a rural community. "Things that matter most in our lives are not fantastic or grand, they are the moments when we touch one another, when we are there in the most attentive or caring way." Jack Kornfield A memorial service will be held at the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church, 61 Pleasant Street Waterville, on Sunday November 15th at 3:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sue's name to the Friends of Quarry Road Recreational Area c/o Waterville Parks and Recreation 6 Wentworth Court Waterville, Maine 04901.
