Vassalboro Melvin ''Lucky'' R. Gurney, 84, of Main St, Vassalboro, passed away Friday, April 18th at Maine General Medical Center in Waterville with family at his side. He was born in Fairfield, November 22, 1923, son of Melvin L. Gurney and Clara Quirion Gurney. He was educated in Fairfield and Winslow schools. Lucky served in the Army during WW11 and received the Bronze Star Medal during his tour in Europe. On Oct. 11, 1947 he married Viviane Dumont of Waterville. Lucky was a well known beer salesman for 35 years. He had been employed for Capital Distributors, A. Diversi Distributors and retired from Valley Distributors. He was a proud Charter member of the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge #2531, Life member of the Winslow V.F.W. Post #8835 and member of the Watervile American-Legion Bourque-Lanigan Post #5. Lucky was a very generous man who gave continually to many charities around the world. He always had an open door to his infamous ''garage'' and home. Many of us have memories of great times there over the years. Horseshoes, poker and pool Survivors include: daughter, Brenda White and husband Rick of Albion; grandchildren, Nina Chapman of Waterville, Christopher Chapman of Winthrop, Brittney White of Albion, Kristen and Caleb Frappier, and their dad, Jim of Vassalboro; a sister, Olivette Bujold of Skowhegan and a brother, Lionel of Florida. He was predeceased by: his parents, his wife and his daughter Karen Chapman. Sisters: Juliette Gurney of Winslow, Jeannette Nadeau and Evelyn Voisine of Conn. and brother Leewood of Waterville. A graveside military memorial service will be held Saturday, April 26th at 11am at the St. Frances Cemetery in Waterville with Deacon Peter Joseph officiating.
