Waterville, ME – Joyce Claire Scully, 85, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the Alfond Center for Health surrounded by her family. Born in South Amboy, New Jersey on December 11, 1938, to the parents of Bernard and Martha Soden (Witkowski). Joyce graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1956. She went on to attend the Standard School of Beauty Culture and worked as a beautician for over 20 years. Joyce retired as an Insurance Rep from Margaretten Insurance Company. She was a devoted Catholic throughout her life. Joyce proudly served as PTA President at Sacred Heart School for two years while her sons attended schooling there. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother and belonged to the Red Hat Society. Joyce married the love of her life, James P. Scully, Sr., on February 7, 1959 at Sacred Heart Church in South Amboy. They enjoyed decades of camping adventures at Holiday Haven Campground in Estelle Manor, NJ. Joyce greatly enjoyed putting together puzzles, reading, crosswords, and watching a romantic Hallmark movie. She was a Grammy to everyone she met and was lovingly referred to as “Grammy” or “Grammy Scully” to whomever she encountered. Her family was her most prize possession with a heart full of love she made sure to never miss mailing a birthday card. Joyce made sure to keep her family up to date on the details of every cousin, aunt or uncle’s life events across the United States. Joyce had become quite tech savvy in recent years and enjoyed sending “me-moji’s” to her family. Joyce was predeceased by her parents; her husband, James Sr.; sister, Eileen; brother-in-law’s Al, Jack and Hermon, and sister-in-law, Mary Pat; nephew, Brian; and granddaughter, Victoria. She is survived by her three sons Robert (Tammy) Scully, Jim (Lisa) Scully, and John (Jenny) Scully. She deeply loved her grandchildren: Jamilynn, AJ, Katie, Mark, Niquole, Joe, Megan, Kyle and Evan, and her ten great-grandchildren. Her brother, James and Carol Soden; sister, Marylou and Dave Lobycz; brother in law and sister in law, Leo and Patty Scully; sister in law, Betty Ann Massing; brother in law, Kevin Scully, and several nieces and nephews; lifelong best friends, Sonia Wilson and Laverne Creange. She was a sister and Grammy to so many others that she loved with all her heart. A special thanks to the nurses and staff at Alfond Center for Health – 2 West, Oak Grove Nursing Home, and Lakewood Nursing Home for all their help the last few years. Thank you for the care and compassion each of you gave! Services will be held on Saturday, July 20th as follows: Graveside service and burial at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Cemetery, located on Johnson Lane, Sayreville, NJ. Please join us for a celebration of Joyce’s life from 12:00 – 3:00 PM at the Robert Frey Hall at East Brunswick Independent Fire Company, 216 Joseph Street, East Brunswick, NJ. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm Street, Waterville. An online guestbook may be signed, condolences and memories shared at www.gallantfh.com In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joyce’s name to a breast or lung cancer foundation of your choice.
