Vassalboro John Joseph McLaughlin, 63, of Grey Road in Vassalboro, died unexpectedly Mon., July 5, 2010, in Augusta. He was born in Gardiner, Oct. 4, 1946 the son of Joshua and Katherine Slocum McLaughlin. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Viet Nam War. He had been a fitter and foreman at Civa Steel and also worked at Capitol City Tire. He was a member of the American Legion in Gardiner. Mr. McLaughlin thoroughly enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, camping, and spending time with his grandchildren. He could eat brook trout until he was full. He built his own ice shack. Survivors include his wife the true love of his life, Arlene Arbo McLaughlin; three daughters, Helen Waterhouse, Kimberly Smith and Jean Blanchard all of Gardiner; step-son, William Huff, Jr. and step-daughter, Heather Huff both of Waterville; a brother Jim McLaughlin and his wife Irene of Riverside, CA.; two sisters, Ann White of Carroll, ME and Marie Stilphen of FL.; a brother-in-law, Albert French and wife Eva of Vassalboro; 17 grandchildren; two great grandchildren with one on the way; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; and by three sisters, Irene, Helen and Nancy. Committal prayers and burial with Military Honors will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2010 in the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta. Arrangements are with the Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.
