George Arthur Silva, Jr. 1927 2005 FAIRFIELD, Maine George Arthur Silva passed away Sunday, August 7, 2005 at his home with his family. He was born on August 14, 1927 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of George Silva and Elizabeth MacTaggett. He moved to Waterville, Maine as a child and attended local schools when he left to join the Merchant Marines. He later joined the Navy and proudly served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. He married his former wife, Joan Carey, and they had three children, Peter, Debra and Michael. George worked for the City of Waterville as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement. For several years he owned and operated a local tavern. He was a very active and social person who enjoyed spending time with his many friends. Young people were drawn to his fun loving nature. He especially enjoyed playing cards with his friends at the American Legion Post #5 in Waterville. He was a member of the Elks Club and Waterville VFW. Throughout his life he had a deep interest in cars and racing having been a Unity Track Champion, 1955 Eastern Maine State Champion and was inducted into the Unity Raceway Hall of Fame. He took great pleasure in following the racing careers of his sons in North Carolina as was also proud of the work his daughter did with Senior Spectrum. George had a compassionate side he preferred no one saw. During his lifetime he rescued many animals, especially abandoned dogs. He had a close spiritual bond with his wolf dog, Mariah, who passed away hours later. For a brief period of time he owned a tractor trailer and was known to return from trips with a truck load of shoes to give to needy children in Watervilles North End. He was a man who spoke his mind, had a great work ethic and never stood still. He was very grateful for the wonderful care he received from the staff of the MaineGeneral Thayer Oncology Department. George is survived by two sons, Peter Silva of Leicester, NC, and Michael Silva of Fairfield, ME and a daughter, Debra Silva of Waterville, ME. He will also be missed by his dear companion, Charlotte Gurney of Waterville, ME. Family and Friends may pay their last respects to George Tuesday, August 9, from 2 4pm and 7 9pm at Gallant Funeral Home on Elm Street, Waterville, ME. A funeral service will be celebrated Wednesday, August 10th, 2005 at Gallant Funeral Home.
