Evelyn M. Fortier Obituary (1931 - 2008)

Evelyn M. Fortier 1931 2008 Evelyn was born on April 6, 1931 to Albert and Geneva McKinnon of Mexico, Maine. She was educated in Mexico schools and upon graduating from Mexico High School became employed by the Oxford Paper Company in Rumford, where she met the love of her life, Albert Fortier. They were married in 1957 and moved to New York City where Al finished his studies at Fordham University. Upon his graduation they moved to Winslow to raise their family. Evelyn was an active member of the Winslow Lioness Club for many years. She held various offices in that organization and led their annual fund-raising campaigns. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Johns Church in Winslow and was proud to serve as a Eucharistic Minister there. Evelyn was a devoted wife, mother and loving friend to many and she treasured her neighbors on Chadwick Street as if they were part of her family. Evelyn loved children and babysat in her home for many years. She has maintained relationships with many of her children over the years and remained a loving mentor to many of them through the years. She is survived by her husband of 50 years Albert Fortier of Winslow, a son Michael Fortier of the United Kingdom, a son Jeffery Fortier and his partner Royal Allen of Chicago, her daughter Denise LaPointe and her son-in-law Paul LaPointe, both of Winslow. The lights of her life were her two grandchildren Jacob and Rachel LaPointe of Winslow. She was also survived by her sisters and their husbands, Margie and Albert Soucy and Barbara and Bill Hodge all of Dixfield, Florence Wardewell of Mexico, and Jeannie Cote of Rumford. She also had many nieces, nephews and Godchildren who were very dear to her. She was pre-deceased by her parents, sisters Moni, Dotty, Jackie, Shirley and a brother James. Evelyn will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who possessed incredible strength of will, faith, and a great sense of humor. She was loved by all who were lucky enough to know her. She was the type of person who would bring you a hot meal when you were sick, bake chocolate chip cookies when you needed a lift, or provide a non-judgmental ear when you needed a friend. Evelyn will be sadly missed by her family and friends but we take comfort in knowing that we had the privilege of knowing a true angel. Memorial arrangements are being handled by Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm Street, Waterville, Maine, 04901. A memorial Mass will be said at St. John the Baptist Church in Winslow on Saturday, February 2nd at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Maine General Medical Center Dialysis Center or Waterville Critical Care Unit Education Fund.
