Doris D. Karter Obituary (1928 - 2013)

Doris D. Karter of Waterville died Fri., Jan. 25, 2013 at Lakewood Center. She was born May 14, 1928 in Skowhegan the daughter of Mahlon A. and Isabell M. Lyon Dane, Sr. She was educated in Skowhegan schools and worked as a tax collector and bookkeeper in the Town Manager's office. She married George S. Karter Nov. 23, 1950 and moved to Waterville. In 1951 she accepted employment with Hollingsowrth & Whitney Company which became Scott Paper Company. After completing 36 years of combined service, she retired from the position of Personnel Services Manager in 1987 but was retained under contracted service for an additional three years. During her career years, she held memberships in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Zonta Club International, the Scott Management Club and was a Past President of the Waterville Area Industrial Management Club. She served nine years on the Board of Director of Associated Hospital Services of Maine BC/BS. She and her husband enjoyed many Caribbean cruises and winter vacations in Florida. Their greatest pleasure was the excellent trout and salmon fishing they had at their summer home on Upper Wilson Pond where family and friends were always welcome. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband,; brothers, Mahlon A. Dane, Jr. and David H. Dane and wife Margaret of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.; and a sister, Mary D. Hebert and husband Raymond of Topsfield, MA. Survivors include her brother, Richard D. Dane and wife Beverly M. of Norridgewock and by several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Fairfield Center United Methodist Church. Rev. Francis Merritt will officiate at a memorial service at the church at 11 a.m. Feb. 16, 2013. It was her desire that flowers be omitted and her hope that friends and relatives would join her family for lunch at the church immediately following the service. She spoke highly of Dr. David Preston and his nurse, Debbie Hutchins, and of Dr. Andrew Hertler and his staff at the Harold Alfond Cancer Care Center. Her family acknowledges and thanks them for their dedicated and excellent care throughout the years.
