Waterville - Donald Gray Leach, Veteran, died March 25, 2015. Don was born in Madison, Maine on September 17, 1923, the youngest child of Ernest and Elizabeth Gray Leach. He graduated from Madison High School in 1941 and from Colby College in 1949. He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII in the European Theater. He met Joan Gridley at Colby while acting in the play Arsenic and Old Lace. They married December 29, 1951 and settled in Waterville. Don served as a national representative for Kappa Delta Rho fraternity after graduation from Colby, then took a job as Traffic and Distribution Manager with Keyes Fibre Company in Waterville where he worked for 35 years. He served on the Waterville Board of Zoning Appeals for several years. After retirement, Don and Joan moved to Bailey Island, Maine where they operated Cloverleaf Cottage, a bed and breakfast, and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. He was predeceased by his parents and 5 siblings, his daughter, Sarah, and his wife, Joan, who died in 1992. He is survived by four children: Meredith, Bremerton, WA, Martha Tony, Glen Allen, VA, Beryl Libby, New Delhi, India, and David Lisa, Waterville, ME; eight grandchildren: Colin and Elizabeth Potter, Andy Rebecca, Brian Kelly, Caroline, and Sam Proulx, and Zachary and Melissa Leach; and two great-grandchildren, Claire Proulx and Frankie Potter-Jewell. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Clark Buffington, 5 loving nieces and a nephew. Don was a good conversationalist, quick-witted, and ready with a quip for anyone. He also enjoyed playing bridge, cribbage, and golf. He played in the Keyes Fibre Golf League. Shopping, especially at Marden's, was a favorite pastime. Don continued his travel adventures overseas with his daughters for many years. He considered Ireland his second home. We thank the staff at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta for the care and attention they provided Dad for the last 4 years. We remember a loving Dad who lived life well, and we miss him very much. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the charity of your choice in Don's name. Visiting hours will be held from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. Sat. , April 18, 2015, at Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville with a funeral service at 6 P.M. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Madison at a later date.
