Charles Hadyniak, Jr.

–

Freedom, ME

Freedom Charles ''Wassey'' Hadyniak Jr., 70 passed away peacefully at home on Wed. afternoon, Aug. 17, 2005 after a battle with liver cancer. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Maria and Wasyl Hadyniak; sister Sophie; and brothers, John, Joseph ''Slim'', and Theodore Teddy''. Missing him greatly are his wife of 46 years, Sallyann Muchie Hadyniak; son, Charles ''Chuck''; daughter-in-law Lynn; twin grandsons Tyler and Kyle, all of Freedom, ME; and his devoted sister Anna Hadyniak of Carteret, NJ. Missing him, too, are his friends through his son's marriage, Norm and Evan Qualtrough of VA, and Gisela Qualtrough of Freedom. He also leaves behind niece Cathy Burns; nephews John and Joseph; and several great-nieces and - nephews, all of NJ. Wassey graduated from Carteret High School in 1953 and was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Navy, on the destroyer USS Purdy DD-734, until his honorable discharge in 1957. He worked 40 years at G.A.T.X. General American Tank Storage in Carteret, NJ, retiring in 1993. ''Grandpa'', as he was lovingly called by his grandsons, was born and raised in Carteret, where he lived until 1997. It was then, at the age of 62, that he moved to Freedom with his wife, mother-in-law, son, and son's family, to live his dream: owning a home and land in a beautiful place. He was his grandsons' #1 hockey fan, and a big part of their lives, spending every afternoon with them during the school year, taking part in all their school, baseball, and hockey activities, and spending almost every weekday with them during the summers. He was his son's ''Coach Chuck'' assistant coach of the Freedom youth baseball teams from 2000 through 2005. He would say to his son: ''Chuck, they may be your sons, but they are my boys!'' Wassey loved living in the country--he attended all the ''suppahs'' and activities that went on in Freedom, and really enjoyed spending time laughing and talking with the ''guys'' at the Freedom General Store. Paul Flynn, owner of the store, even named a sandwich after him, calling it the ''Wassey Special''. He loved his home and his land, for it was his piece of heaven and he found serenity there. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Wassey's life at his home in Freedom on Sat. afternoon from 3-5. Wassey will be cremated, and friends are invited to pay their respects from 7 - 9 p.m. Sunday at the Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville. A Veteran's Service will be held there at 7:30 p.m. Mass services will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 112 Silver St., Waterville, at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22. All who knew Wassey are welcome. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. ''Until We Meet Again.'' In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice Care, 147 Waldo Ave., Belfast, ME 04915, who were of such comfort to Wassey and his family; or to the American Cancer Society, New England Div., Inc., One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
