Waterville - Barbara Sullivan Knowlton, 89, of Waterville died peacefully at home on April 5, 2016. She was born on February 19, 1927 in Boston, MA, daughter of Les and Ethel Sullivan. \r\nBarbara moved to Wiscasset Maine in 1938, graduating from Wiscasset Academy in 1943 at the age of 16.\r\n\r\nBarbara graduated from her beloved University of Maine in Orono in 1948 with a degree in nursing. "Sully" maintained a tie with UMaine throughout her adult life as an active member of the Alumni Association, the Senior Alumni Association, the Charles Allen Society and the University of Maine Foundation.\r\n\r\nWhile at Orono, Barbara met the love of her life, Ralph G. Knowlton. They were married in Wiscasset in 1949 and moved to Waterville in 1952. Barbara and Ralph raised three boys in Waterville and Barbara was blessed with eight grandchildren.\r\n\r\nBarbara spent 40 years as an active nurse in Waterville, working for Thayer hospital in various capacities and later for Dr. Ken Sewall. She began her lifelong commitment to volunteerism at the hospital in 1952, starting with the Thayer Hospital Auxiliary, and extending well past her retirement. She gave of her time to what is now Maine General Medical Center in many areas, but perhaps most memorably in the hospital gift shop and pharmacy in her early retirement years. Barbara was also a hospice volunteer.\r\n\r\nWhen not volunteering at the hospital, she was active in community volunteer circles, serving the Waterville Women's Club for over 50 years along with many other civic causes. Socially, she hosted many Thursday bridge games, impromptu cocktail gatherings and an occasional road trip. Her friendships stretched across New England.\r\n\r\nAlways close to her heart was St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She served for many years on the Vestry, was a delegate several times to the Diocesan Conference and volunteered on the Martha Guild, the Altar Guild, the Quilter's Group, the Evening sandwich program, the Prayer Shawl Ministry and at times she helped run the church office.\r\n\r\nBarbara was predeceased by her husband Ralph. She is survived by her brother Kenneth Sullivan of Damariscotta and her three children and their families, including son Bob Knowlton and wife Stephanie, of Oakland, son Rick Knowlton and wife Leslie, of Scarborough, and son Bill Knowlton and wife Rosemary of Little Silver, NJ; grandchildren Jessica Knowlton, Whitney Knowlton Grover and husband Nick, Audrey Knowlton, Kyle Knowlton and wife Sarah, Abby Knowlton, Jay Knowlton, Andrew Knowlton and Wyatt Knowlton.\r\n\r\nA celebration service will be held on Saturday, April 9th at St. Mark's Church on Eustis Parkway in Waterville at 11:30 am.\r\n\r\nArrangements are under the care of Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm Street, Waterville.
