Winslow Ada Althea Carter, 84, of Winslow, went home to be with the Lord Apr. 14, 2007 after a long courageous battle with rheumatoid arthritis and related complications. Ada was born in Waterville, Aug. 6, 1922 at the home of her maternal aunt, Mrs. Percy Linnie Getchell, a practical nurse and midwife. During the ministry of the Rev. Harold C. Metzger, Ada accepted the message of Christ at the age of nine at the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church where she remained a committed and active member from her youth until her marriage in 1970. She and her husband moved out of state in 1971. In each community where Ada resided, her commitment to God and the local church was always steadfast. She was a graduate of Waterville High School class of 1940 and later attended Thomas Business College in Waterville. She worked at the Harris Bakery, J.C. Penney and Larsen's Gift Store. She was employed for 20 years at the Waterville Junior High as the secretary to the principal. Upon leaving the Waterville area, Ada worked in the following positions: The Waterford, CT office of the tax collector and at the vocational high school in Rochester, MA as a secretary. Upon returning to Waterville, she worked for the school psychologist, Dr. Raymond for a while then she and her husband moved to Winchester, MA where she was employed as an office manager of the Winchester Racquetball Club. While living in Augusta, Ada continued to work part time until retiring in 1988. She was an active member of the reunion committee of her high school class, a member of the Rebekah Lodge and also a member of the Blessed Hope Advent Christian Church in Waterville. She is survived by her husband, Arnold Carter of Winslow. They would have been married for 37 years in August. She is also survived by her elder sister, Irene Sawtelle of Waterville; three nieces, Marion Farrar of Placida, FL., Lurene Forbes of Brunswick, and Janice Dean of Whitefield; several second and third generation nieces and nephews and the Littlefield cousins from the Old Town area, Bunny, Bea, Gert, and Lois. Ada was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Clymena Downs Littlefield; a sister, Jessamine Smith; two brothers-in-law, Erman Smith and Lewis Sawtelle. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sat., June 2, 2007 at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Grove St., Waterville. Following the service, there will be a reception at the Family Life Center at the Blessed Hope Advent Christian Church, 10 Pleasaant St., Waterville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a faith based ministry of one's choice or to the Arthritis Foundation, Northern and Southern New England Chapters, 35 Cold Spring Rd., Building 400, Ste 411, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
